Method of Authentic Instruction : Role-Play

StandardSS8H1- The student will evaluate the development of Native American cultures and the impact of European exploration and settlement on the Native American cultures in Georgia.

Grade Level/Subject : 8th Grade Georgia Studies

Description of Lesson
In order to master this standard, the students will be divided in several small groups. Within the small groups, they will then be divided into "Native Americans" and "Europeans". Each group as a whole is required to use the Internet as a technology tool to research the impact Europeans had on the Native American cultures in Georgia. The sub-groups (Europeans & Native Americans) are to research important characters in Georgia's history within their assigned cultural group. Once the students have enough research on characters in that historical period and feel they have a grasp on what was taking place during this time, they are to use GoogleDocs to collaborate within their subgroup (either Europeans or Native Americans) to share their research. By using GoogleDocs, the subgroups will be allowed to see what the other students in their group found and will use the information to create a role-playing skit portraying their perspective on the European settlement during this time period. Once the subgroup has created their skit, they will join with their larger group of both Native Americans and Europeans to collaborate filming the skits and editing using Vimeo. The groups will then present their skits using Vimeo to the entire class. As a reward for completing the project and mastering the standard, the class will watch the film Disney's Pocahontas. They will be required to write a short summary on the differences between the way the movie portrays this time period compared to the research they did and the video they made.
